MedGrid vs Amazon Business for medical practices

Updated October 2026

The short answer: Amazon Business is a general business marketplace with strong purchasing controls: approvals, spend limits, multi-user accounts, procurement integrations and fast shipping with Prime Business. It sells medical supplies, and its Professional Healthcare program lets verified practitioners buy professional-use and prescription medical devices. MedGrid is a medical-only platform where verified clinicians buy from verified vendors, send 503A prescriptions to licensed pharmacies and get help from Genesis, MedGrid's built-in AI assistant. Many practices would use Amazon Business for the office and general consumables, and a medical platform for clinical and specialty products.

"Does Amazon sell medical supplies?" and "is Amazon Business worth it?" are common questions from practice managers, and for good reason: it's where many offices already buy everything else. This guide compares Amazon Business and MedGrid for a medical practice, using Amazon's own pages and what MedGrid does today, and says where each one is stronger.

Amazon Business at a glance

From Amazon's own pages:

  • Account: Amazon Business offers a free account. Its help pages say a legal business or other organization can create one, provides business information for verification, and can add requisitioners who buy on the company's behalf.
  • Healthcare: its healthcare page offers savings on essential medical supplies from trusted brands, and lists health systems, an urgent care network and a veterinary group among its customer stories.
  • Purchasing controls: buying policies that mark categories or sellers as preferred, restricted or blocked, spend limits, multi-level approvals (up to 6 levels, per its help pages), user permissions and buying groups, and 3-Way Match of order, receipt and invoice.
  • Integrations: it says it integrates with over 300 systems, and that you can connect an existing e-procurement system through Punchout.
  • Prime Business: paid tiers listed at $179 a year for Essentials (up to 5 users), $499 for Small (up to 20 users), $1,299 for Medium (up to 200 users) and $10,099 for Enterprise, plus a Duo tier free with a personal Prime membership for sole proprietors.
  • Pricing tools: quantity discounts from as low as 2 units, Request for Quote on single-SKU purchases over $10,000 or 999 units, and up to 15% off with Subscribe & Save on frequently purchased products.
  • Paying: Pay by Invoice is now called Business Credit Account, an invite-only feature with standard 30-day payment terms; eligible Prime Business plans can get 45- or 60-day terms on approval.
  • Tax: the Amazon Tax Exemption Program lets eligible organizations in the U.S. and Canada make tax-exempt purchases.
  • Regulated products: the Professional Healthcare program lets select licensed practitioners register a license or credential to buy professional-use only and prescription (Rx) medical devices. Amazon says it verifies most business accounts by the supervising practitioner's license, that professional-use products ship only to a verified address associated with the credential, and that the program is available in all U.S. states except Mississippi. Accepted license types vary by state.
  • AI and automation: Amazon Business Assistant gives AI-powered guidance on select settings pages, and Amazon notes it may not always get things right. Alexa for Shopping helps research and compare products. Amazon Business Restock, offered in select U.S. cities, monitors and restocks products on site.

We did not find a statement on Amazon Business pages about selling prescription drugs to practices; the healthcare program pages we read cover medical devices.

MedGrid at a glance

MedGrid is the platform doctors use to run the buying side of their practice: wholesale ordering from verified vendors, prescriptions to licensed pharmacies, invoices and staff logins, with Genesis, MedGrid's built-in AI assistant, helping along the way (see what Genesis can and can't do).

  • Genesis: ask Genesis where an order is, whether it has shipped or what is in your cart, and it answers from your own account. It can explain what an order is waiting on, list what you're due to reorder, answer product questions from the listing (pack size, cold shipping, documents, your price) and prepare a reorder or a hand-off to checkout that you confirm. It never places, pays for or transmits an order on its own.
  • Medical only, verified on both sides: clinicians sign up free with their NPI checked against the federal NPPES registry. Vendors are approved by MedGrid before they sell, and their licences and registrations are marked verified once MedGrid has checked them.
  • Catalog: 2,000+ products and 200+ brands, and growing, from clinic supplies and devices to skincare, aesthetics and compounded medications.
  • Prescriptions: 503A prescriptions go to pharmacies filtered by the patient's state, and controlled lines need a DEA registration MedGrid's verification team has reviewed.
  • Price and staff: ask for a better price on any product; an approved price applies to every order after. Staff logins carry an ordering switch you control.

Where Amazon Business is the better fit

  • Everything that isn't clinical. Office, cleaning, breakroom and IT supplies, alongside general consumables.
  • Purchasing controls at scale. Approval chains, spend limits and blocked categories are more detailed than a per-person ordering switch.
  • Procurement systems. If your group buys through an e-procurement system, Punchout and 300+ integrations matter.
  • Fast shipping and subscriptions. Prime Business shipping and Subscribe & Save suit predictable, repeat purchases. Genesis can tell you what's due, but it doesn't set up recurring orders.
  • Tax-exempt organizations. A built-in tax exemption program.

Where MedGrid is the better fit

  • Clinical and specialty products from checked sellers. Every vendor is approved by MedGrid, and you can read their licences before you order. For what to look for, see buying from verified vendors.
  • Prescriptions and compounded medications. 503A prescriptions go to pharmacies filtered by the patient's state; only 503A prescriptions ship to a patient. See 503A or 503B?
  • Aesthetic injectables and biologics. Regulated categories carry their own credential and vendor requirements. For neuromodulators, read how to buy Botox wholesale safely before you buy anywhere.
  • Price requests. Ask for a better price on any product, with a competitor's invoice if you have one.
  • Questions answered from your account. Genesis knows your orders, tracking and reorder history, and answers product questions from the listing.

A note on regulated products, wherever you buy

A general marketplace and a medical platform can both carry regulated items, so the checks are the same. Confirm who the seller is, that they are licensed to sell the product to you, and that it will ship to an address that matches your credential. For prescription drugs, FDA tells health care professionals to know their source. If your med spa is run under a medical director, check whose licence the account relies on and that your licence type is accepted in your state.

How to decide: questions to ask

  1. Split your spend. Office and general consumables on one side; clinical, specialty and prescription products on the other.
  2. Who approves orders? If you need multi-level approvals and budgets, check how each platform handles them.
  3. Who is the seller? For every clinical product, know the seller and its licences.
  4. What do you need help with? Settings and product research, or order status and reorders from your own account?
  5. What does membership cost you? Price Prime Business tiers against what you'd buy, and compare delivered prices item by item.
