MedGrid vs Henry Schein Medical: broad-line distributor or specialty platform?

MedGrid · · 9 min read

Updated October 2026

The short answer: Henry Schein Medical is a broad-line distributor built for everyday med-surg buying: a very large catalog, a next-day delivery network, pharmaceuticals and vaccines, equipment, ordering apps and practice services. MedGrid is the platform doctors use to run the buying side of a specialty practice, with many verified vendors in one cart, 503A prescriptions to licensed pharmacies, and Genesis, MedGrid's built-in AI assistant, for orders, tracking and reorders. Many practices would keep a broad-line distributor for commodity supplies and add MedGrid for specialty categories.

A search for a Henry Schein alternative usually starts with a specific need: a category your account doesn't cover, too many specialty suppliers to manage, or wanting to see who is behind a product before you order it. This comparison uses what Henry Schein says on its own website and what MedGrid's platform does today, and it is plain about where each one is stronger. For the wider picture of buying channels, see distributor vs medical supply marketplace.

Henry Schein Medical at a glance

Henry Schein Medical describes itself as the largest provider of medical supplies, equipment and services to office-based practitioners, and says it serves 140,000+ U.S. physician offices. From its own pages:

  • Catalog: its medical home page advertises 190,000 medical products in one place, plus its own Henry Schein Brand line across med-surg, lab, diagnostic, instrument and infection-prevention categories.
  • Delivery: it says 9 in 10 orders arrive next day and that 94% of orders received ship next or same day, with a note that some remote areas can take longer. Its capabilities page describes five "Mega" distribution centers covering over two million square feet, all ISO and VAWD certified.
  • Pharmaceuticals and controlled substances: its Ready 360 program is described as an end-to-end pharmaceutical distribution solution, it calls itself an Approved Distributor of Record, and practices can order Schedule II drugs through its CSOS-compliant electronic ordering system (e222). It states it is fully compliant with the federal Drug Supply Chain Security Act.
  • Ordering tools: the Henry Schein Medical Portal app lets staff scan a shelf barcode label to add items to an order, use voice dictation, and track orders, invoices and statements. Its capabilities page lists automated min/max par levels, order approvals and budgets, suggested orders, an electronic item formulary and multi-vendor capabilities.
  • Buying programs: its Primary Care Purchasing Program uses members' combined purchasing volume to negotiate lower prices, and the account then reflects the contracted prices automatically.
  • Aesthetics: its plastic surgery page speaks to practices and med spas, lists aesthetic procedures its equipment and products support (including Botox/dermal filler, chemical peels and laser/IPL), and lists setup services such as financing, design, GPO contracting and in-house dispensing.
  • Account setup: new customers can open an account online, and Henry Schein asks practices joining its buying program to call its sales team for prompt setup.
  • Services: a White Glove delivery service and a SolutionsHub of clinical, financial and operational services, including equipment repair.

We did not find an AI ordering assistant on the Henry Schein Medical pages we checked. Its automation is in the ordering tools above: par levels, suggested orders, barcode scanning and voice dictation.

MedGrid at a glance

MedGrid is the platform doctors use to run the buying side of their practice: wholesale ordering from verified vendors, prescriptions to licensed pharmacies, invoices and staff logins, with Genesis, MedGrid's built-in AI assistant, helping along the way (see what Genesis can and can't do).

  • Genesis: ask Genesis where an order is, whether it has shipped or what is in your cart, and it answers from your own account. It can tell you what an order is waiting on, such as payment, the pharmacy or a backorder, list what you're due to reorder, and prepare a reorder or a hand-off to checkout that you confirm. Genesis never places, pays for or transmits an order on its own, and it doesn't give doses or treatment advice.
  • Specialty catalog: 2,000+ products and 200+ brands, and growing, across clinic supplies, devices and equipment, skincare, supplements, aesthetics and compounded medications, from many vendors in one cart with one invoice trail.
  • Verified on both sides: clinicians sign up free and their NPI is checked against the federal NPPES registry at signup. Vendors are approved by MedGrid before they sell, and their licences and registrations are marked verified once MedGrid has checked them, on store pages you can read before you order.
  • Prescriptions: 503A prescriptions go to pharmacies, and the prescriber chooses from pharmacies filtered by the patient's state, using the states each pharmacy lists. Controlled-substance lines need a DEA registration that MedGrid's verification team has reviewed.
  • Price: ask for a better price on any product, with a competitor's invoice if you have one; an approved price applies to every order after.
  • Staff: staff logins under your practice, each with an ordering switch you control.

Where Henry Schein Medical is the better fit

  • High-volume med-surg and exam-room supplies. A catalog of this size, a private-label line and a next-day network are hard to match for gloves, syringes, exam-table paper, diagnostics and lab supplies.
  • Pharmaceuticals, vaccines and Schedule II ordering. If you stock vaccines and injectables or order Schedule II drugs, a distributor with a pharmaceutical program and electronic Schedule II ordering is built for that.
  • Supply-room automation. Barcode scanning from the shelf, par levels and suggested orders suit practices that reorder the same items every week. Genesis can list what you're due to reorder, but it doesn't set up recurring or scheduled orders.
  • Equipment, service and setup. Equipment, a White Glove delivery service, equipment repair and practice-setup services in one relationship.
  • Contract pricing. If a purchasing program or GPO contract covers your top items, a distributor that applies those prices automatically can be the simpler choice. See lower costs without a GPO for how to compare.

Where MedGrid is the better fit

  • Specialty buying across many vendors. Aesthetics, wellness and longevity supplies, devices, skincare and compounded medications from many verified vendors, in one cart and one login, instead of an account with each.
  • Compounded prescriptions. 503A prescriptions go to pharmacies licensed for the patient's state, and only 503A prescriptions ship to a patient. Everything else ships to your office. For the rules behind that, see 503A or 503B?
  • Seeing the seller before you buy. Vendor licences and registrations sit on their store pages, marked verified once MedGrid has checked them. See what to check before you order.
  • Negotiating item by item. One price request, once approved, covers every order after.
  • Admin by question. Genesis answers "where is my order", "what is this order waiting on" and "what am I due to reorder" from your own account.
  • The rules in one place. MedGrid's regulations research covers FDA rules by product category and what each state adds, and the FDA daily tracks shortages, approvals and recalls.

Replace, or add a second channel?

For most practices it's the second. Keep a broad-line distributor for commodity med-surg, pharmaceuticals and equipment, where its catalog and delivery network are strengths, and use MedGrid for the specialty categories and prescriptions it is built for. Moving everything makes sense only when your med-surg spend is small and your specialty spend is large.

How to decide: questions to ask

  1. What do your invoices say? Export 12 months of purchases and split commodity med-surg from specialty categories.
  2. Which items are on contract? If your top items carry program or GPO prices, compare those prices first.
  3. Do you stock controlled substances or vaccines? If so, check each channel's licensing steps and ordering systems for those lines.
  4. Who checks the seller? For every regulated product, confirm the source is licensed and authorized. FDA tells health care professionals to know their source.
  5. What should automation do? Shelf scanning and par levels, or answers and reorders from a chat? Decide which helps your team, and check that anything an assistant does waits for your confirmation.

Frequently asked questions

Is MedGrid a Henry Schein alternative?

For specialty categories, yes. For broad med-surg, pharmaceuticals, vaccines and equipment, Henry Schein Medical's catalog and delivery network cover far more. Many practices use a distributor for commodity supplies and MedGrid for specialty buying.

Does Henry Schein Medical sell to med spas?

Its plastic surgery page speaks to plastic surgery practices and med spas and lists aesthetic procedures its equipment and products support. Ask Henry Schein which products your account can order.

How does MedGrid verify buyers and sellers?

Your NPI is checked against the federal NPPES registry at signup, and controlled-substance lines need a DEA registration MedGrid's verification team has reviewed. Vendors are approved by MedGrid before they sell, and their licences and registrations are marked verified once checked. State licences are verified by the pharmacies that fill prescriptions.

Can Genesis reorder my supplies automatically?

No. Genesis can list what you're due to reorder and prepare a reorder, but nothing is added or ordered until you confirm, and it doesn't set up recurring orders. Checkout and payment stay with you.

Does it cost anything to join MedGrid?

No. Clinicians sign up free, and wholesale pricing is visible once your NPI is verified.
