Updated October 2026
The short answer: McKesson Medical-Surgical is a national med-surg distributor: a very large catalog, next-day delivery to most customers, pharmaceuticals and lab solutions, a private-label line and inventory tools. It is in the middle of becoming Wellverse. MedGrid is the platform doctors use to run the buying side of a specialty practice: many verified vendors in one cart, 503A prescriptions to licensed pharmacies, and Genesis, MedGrid's built-in AI assistant, for orders, tracking and reorders. For commodity med-surg, a national distributor is hard to beat; for specialty categories, MedGrid is built for the job.
Small practices, med spas and wellness clinics often ask whether they need McKesson, a specialty supplier, or both. This comparison uses what McKesson says on its own website and what MedGrid's platform does today, and says where each one is stronger. For how all the buying channels fit together, see distributor vs medical supply marketplace.
McKesson Medical-Surgical at a glance
From McKesson's own pages:
- Who it is: McKesson describes McKesson Medical-Surgical as the nation's largest distributor of wholesale medical-surgical supplies and equipment, and as a single source for medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and lab solutions. It says it serves more than 200,000 customers, from physician offices and health systems to labs, in-home care and long-term care.
- Catalog: more than 300,000 products, including personal protective equipment, diagnostic equipment, diabetic supplies and incontinence products.
- Delivery: it says its nationwide distribution network offers next-day delivery to 95% of customers with 99.8% order accuracy.
- Private label: McKesson Brands, which McKesson says offers the same or better quality as national brands, with a 12-month window for a full refund or credit when bought directly from McKesson.
- Tools: ordering and inventory tools to track expenses by location or facility, enter purchase orders and approve invoices, plus ScanManager, which it describes as a portable inventory management device, and SupplyManager, where it says you can create lists and formularies and set approval rules.
- Who can buy: a footnote says its offering is only available to properly licensed professionals.
- What's changing: McKesson's medical-supplies page says McKesson Medical-Surgical is becoming Wellverse. In June 2026 McKesson announced that Apollo Funds had acquired an approximately 13% interest in the business, and said it intends to separate the business into an independent, publicly traded company.
We did not find an AI ordering assistant on the McKesson pages we checked. Its tools focus on ordering, inventory and spend tracking.
MedGrid at a glance
MedGrid is the platform doctors use to run the buying side of their practice: wholesale ordering from verified vendors, prescriptions to licensed pharmacies, invoices and staff logins, with Genesis, MedGrid's built-in AI assistant, helping along the way (see what Genesis can and can't do).
- Genesis: ask Genesis where an order is, whether it has shipped or what is in your cart, and it answers from your own account. It can explain what an order is waiting on, list what you're due to reorder from your order history, and prepare a reorder or a hand-off to checkout that you confirm. It never places, pays for or transmits an order on its own.
- Catalog: 2,000+ products and 200+ brands, and growing, with a specialty focus: aesthetics, wellness and longevity supplies, devices, skincare and compounded medications, alongside everyday clinic supplies.
- Verification: clinicians sign up free, with the NPI checked against the federal NPPES registry at signup. Vendors are approved by MedGrid before they sell, and their licences and registrations are marked verified once MedGrid has checked them.
- Prescriptions: 503A prescriptions go to pharmacies filtered by the patient's state, and only 503A prescriptions ship to a patient.
- Pricing and staff: ask for a better price on any product; once approved it applies to every order after. Staff logins carry an ordering switch you control.

Where McKesson Medical-Surgical is the better fit
- Commodity med-surg at volume. PPE, diagnostics, diabetic and incontinence supplies and the long tail of exam-room items, from a catalog many times the size of a specialty platform.
- Delivery you can plan around. A national network with next-day delivery to most customers.
- Pharmaceuticals and lab in the same account. If you stock injectables or run a point-of-care lab, a single source for supplies, pharmaceuticals and lab solutions keeps it together.
- Multi-site spend control. Tracking spend by location or facility and approving invoices suit groups with several sites.
- Private-label savings. A store-brand line is a common way to cut the cost of everyday consumables.
Where MedGrid is the better fit
- Specialty categories from many vendors. Aesthetics, wellness, longevity and regenerative practices buy from many specialty vendors; MedGrid puts them in one cart, one login and one invoice trail.
- Compounded prescriptions. 503A prescriptions go to pharmacies filtered by the patient's state, with only 503A shipping to a patient. See 503A or 503B? for the rules.
- Seeing the seller. Vendor licences and registrations are on their store pages, marked verified once MedGrid has checked them.
- Price requests on any product. Attach a competitor's invoice if you have one; an approved price sticks for every order after.
- Answers without a phone call. Genesis tells you where an order is and what it's waiting on, from your own account.
What the Wellverse change means for buyers
McKesson says the business is becoming Wellverse, and the June 2026 announcement describes a planned separation into an independent public company. A rename doesn't change your account by itself, but it's a sensible time to check the basics: your account number, contract pricing, ordering logins and any integrations, and whether invoices and payment details will change. Ask your McKesson representative, and use the moment to look at which categories you might move to a specialty channel.
How to decide: questions to ask
- Split your spend. Separate 12 months of commodity med-surg from specialty categories such as injectables, compounded medications, skincare and devices.
- Price the top items both ways, delivered, including shipping and minimums.
- Check who sells regulated products. For anything prescription or injectable, confirm the source is licensed and authorized, as FDA advises in Know Your Source. Our guide to buying from verified vendors lists what to check.
- Decide what the tools should do. Inventory scanning and multi-site spend reports, or quick answers and reorders by chat. Some practices want both.
- Keep two channels if it fits. A distributor for commodity supplies and a specialty platform for the rest is a common setup.

Frequently asked questions
Is MedGrid a McKesson alternative?
For specialty categories and compounded prescriptions, yes. For broad med-surg, pharmaceuticals and lab supplies at volume, McKesson Medical-Surgical's catalog and delivery network cover far more. Many practices use both.
Is McKesson Medical-Surgical changing its name?
McKesson's medical-supplies page says McKesson Medical-Surgical is becoming Wellverse. Ask McKesson how and when the change affects your account.
Who can buy on MedGrid?
Verified clinicians and their staff. Your NPI is checked against the NPPES registry at signup, and controlled-substance lines need a DEA registration MedGrid's verification team has reviewed.
Does Genesis replace my ordering staff?
No. Genesis helps with the questions and the busywork, such as order status, tracking and what to reorder, and it prepares actions for a person to confirm. It doesn't place, pay for or send orders on its own.
Can I get better prices without a big contract?
On MedGrid you can ask for a better price on any product and attach a competitor's invoice. For other ways to cut costs, see wholesale medical supplies without a GPO.
